چکیده

We present a method for visualizing single-trial evoked potentials and show applications of the consequent single-trial analysis. The method is based on the wavelet transform, which has an excellent resolution both in the time and frequency domains. Its use provides new information that is not accessible from the conventional analysis of peak amplitudes and latencies of average evoked potentials. We review some of the applications of the single trial analysis to the study of different cognitive processes. First, we describe systematic trial-totrial changes reflecting habituation and sensitization processes. Second, we show how an analysis of trial-to-trial latency variability gives new insights on the mechanisms eliciting a larger mismatch negativity in control subjects, in comparison to sleep deprived subjects when performing a pattern recognition learning task. Third, we show in a rhythm perception task that trained musicians had lower latency jitters than non-musicians, in spite of the fact that there were no differences in the average responses. We conclude that the single trial analysis of evoked potentials opens a wide range of new possibilities for the study of cognitive processes.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to apply recurrence plots on event related potentials (ERPs) recorded during memory recognition tests. EEG signals recorded during memory retrieval in four scalp region were used. Two most important ERP’s components corresponding to memory retrieval, FN400 and LPC, were detected in recurrence plots computed for single-trial EEGs. In addition, the RQA was ...

Adopting New International Health Instruments – What Can We Learn From the FCTC?; Comment on “The Legal Strength of International Health Instruments - What It Brings to Global Health Governance?”

This Commentary forms a response to Nikogosian’s and Kickbusch’s forward-looking perspective about the legal strength of international health instruments. Building on their arguments, in this commentary we consider what we can learn from the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) for the adoption of new legal international health instruments.

Bayesian Analysis of Single Trial Cortical Event-Related Components

Abstract. A common technique in neurophysiology is the recording of electric potentials generated by cortical neuronal ensembles in relation to a specific event. The understanding of event-related potentials requires the identification of signals that are relatively phase-locked to a stimulus or event onset (event-related potentials) as well as non-phase locked activities. It is now widely acce...

Single-trial event-related potentials with wavelet denoising: method and applications

We describe a method based on the wavelet transform for denoising single-trial eventrelated potentials (ERPs). The identification of the event-related responses in the single-trials allows the study of latency jitters and cognitive processes, such as habituation, sensitization and learning. Since the method is fast and parameter free, it could complement ERP conventional analysis. D 2004 Elsevi...
